The Colorectal Therapies HTC is working in partnership with environmental packaging company, Valueform, to extend and enlarge their medical product range.
Valueform create materials for single-use packaging using post-harvest straw, a more environmentally friendly material than conventional paper or plastic. The company recently won a Medilink South East award for its single use disposable medical products, which currently include bedpans, kidney trays and wash bowls, and is looking to the HTC to help it develop these products further.
Managing Director of Valueform, Prakash Korde, said: “We know that our medical products can meet the necessary standards for waterproofing and disposal requirements set by healthcare providers. By drawing on the competence and expertise within the HTC, we can develop new products to meet the day-to-day needs of clinicians and NHS procurement managers.”
Valueform estimate that even if all the potential products used within the NHS were made with surplus straw, it would only use a few thousand tonnes of the five million tonnes the UK produces each year.
The collaboration will be funded through an Innovation Voucher from Innovate UK, which enables external experts to work with companies to help them grow.
