Volatile organics as markers of postoperative complications

Project Lead
Mr Nader Francis (Yeovil Hospital) and Prof Norman Ratcliff (Uni West England)

This project arose out of our Bath regional workshop and involves a collaboration with Bedfont Scientific, who manufacture the GastroCheck breath analyser. The project aims to test organic volatiles in breath and drain fluid of patients undergoing resectional surgery for colorectal disease, as markers for postoperative complications. It involves a collaboration between Yeovil Hospital, North Bristol Hospital, and Leeds teaching Hospitals, and is pump-primed by a HTC IAA award. The project is being led by Mr Nader Francis (Yeovil Hospital) and Prof Norman Ratcliff (Uni West England). Further funding is being sought from the Bowel Disease Research Foundation (BDRF). If successful, this project will deliver point-of-care diagnostics to improve patient outcomes following colorectal surgery
